Nursing Home Worship Services

St. Mary's has had a significant presence in a number of area nursing homes, as a faithful core of volunteers from the parish have continued to go, on a regular basis, to offer a ministry to the elderly who are moving closer to their own "transitions" from this life.

Acolytes
These are the people who serve at the altar in various roles during a service. They range in age from 7 to 70 and serve as crucifers (carry the cross), torch-bearers, (carry candles) thurifers (carry the incense pot) to help make our worship experience complete. They also offer assistance to the priests, and deacons who lead the services.

Lectors

Lectors proclaim the Word of God from the Old and New Testaments and lead the Prayers of the People.

Ushers

The ushers play a vital role in welcoming people to our services. In many cases, the ushers are the first person to greet people on their way to worship, it is, therefore, extremely important that they make a good first impression of St. Mary's. In addition to handing out the service bulletins, the ushers must also be willing and able to assist anyone who either needs directions or needs assistance with going to communion, or just wants to have someone to talk to. All in all it is a very rewarding ministry.

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a quiet behind-the-scenes ministry at St. Mary’s, comprised of four teams of three or four ladies and gentlemen. The Altar Guild have the honor of handling, preparing and caring for the blessed pieces of silver and brass and linens used on the Altar. The Altar Guild prepares for weekly services by setting-up and cleaning up the Altar.  Assistance is also provided for weddings, funerals, memorial services and special services when needed.

Duties include:

  • Set up the Altar for Sunday services one weekend per month, as well as any other services which occur during that week.
  • Launder and iron soiled linens used on the Altar.
  • Clean and polish silver and brass pieces on two clean-up days per year – before Easter and Christmas.
  • Participate in the Altar stripping on Maundy Thursday.
  • Decorate the Altar and church for Christmas.
  • Serve the Altar for weddings, funerals and memorial services as needed.
